THE SWEET CHEAT GONE CHAPTER I GRIEF AND OBLIVION " Mademoiselle Albertine has gone!" How much farther does anguish penetrate in psychology than psychology itself! A moment ago, as I lay analysing my feelings, I had supposed that this separation without a final meeting was precisely what I wished, and, as I compared the mediocrity of the pleasures that Albertine afforded me with the . The Internet Archive was founded in to build an Internet library and to promote universal access to all knowledge. The Archive’s purposes include offering permanent access for researchers. The reader will remember that, long before going that day (on the evening of which the Princesse de Guermantes was to give her party) to pay the Duke and Duchess the visit which I have just described, I had kept watch for their return and had made, in the course of my vigil, a discovery which, albeit concerning M. de Charlus in particular, was in itself so important that I have until now.   The stilo culto, of which Gongora was the native Spanish, Marino the Italian, and Lyly the English representative, asserted its dominion over the favourite authors of French society; the pastoral romance of Honoré d’Urfé—the text-book of pseudo-pastoral gallantry—was the parent of the romances of the Scudérys, de La Calprenède and Mme.

We consider Racine's principal ancient sources, Euripides and Seneca, placing all three versions in their intellectual and aesthetic contexts.

We study twentieth-century translations of Phèdre (Wilbur, Hughes) in light of translation theory and practice. Textual study is complemented by scene study performance. Classes conducted in English. Ted Hughes's "tough, unrhyming avalanche of a translation" (Paul Taylor, The Independent) replaces Racine's alexandrines with an English verse that serves eloquently to convey the protagonists' passions.

The translation, performed to acclaim in London inwill be staged at the Brooklyn Academy of Music instarring Diana Rigg. There would be time for their views to converge on some points: for instance, knowing that she was concerned with the relation of Racine to Euripides may have been one factor among many in his decision to compare the two Phaedra stories.

Where accessible and standard translations are available from existing published works, quotations are made with clearly identified references; where such translations are not, I provide my own.

The program also includes four years of language and mathematics study, three years of laboratory science, and two years of music.
